Sports Illustrated released an intensive look into the number of professional athletes who are turning to adult mesenchymal stem cells to help them recover from sports-related injuries. According to the article published in late July, stem cell therapy is the next big breakthrough in sports medicine. Still, restrictions for use in the U.S. make stem cells an important and debated topic in regenerative medicine and biologics. And yet, stem cell therapy is legal in the NFL and the other major professional sports leagues – because stem cells are considered a medical treatment, not a performance-enhancing substance.
